What’s the difference between a Web App and a website? A website serves information – it’s the sum of the information it holds. Web Apps, on the other hand, do more. A Web App is a platform that allows people to communicate, collaborate and do stuff! Web Apps like Facebook, Twitter, Google Docs and Gmail have become household names.

E.g. A City Council might invite its citizens to record their cultural activity on a searchable, interactive map and input supporting data like videos and biographical information.

They tend to involve real time interaction.

E.g. An FE or HE College might allow students to enrol on line, upload a photo, crop and resize it and then request a student ID card to be posted out to them.

What’s a Mobile App?

Simple. A Mobile App is a Web App that’s been optimised for use on a mobile device. Imagine the City Council, Student or GP above wanted to do exactly the same things – but on their iPhone, iPad, Blackberry or Android device.

The principles are the same but the rules are different – no mouse, smaller screen, different aspect ratio and maybe touch-screen interaction.
