Sport England advises, invests in and promotes community sport to create an active nation. They want to get two million people more active in sport by 2012.
IE Design Consultancy was approached by Sport England on the recommendation of an existing client and appointed after submission of a proposal document.
Sport England was specifically struggling to deliver £15million worth of £2.5–£5K grants into the hands of their ‘hard to reach’ target groups: disabled people, lower socio economic groups, young people and black and ethnic minority groups. Research showed that the application process was complex and inaccessible to all but educated, proficient form fillers.
Sport England knew they had a problem but had no idea what the solution might look like. IE Design Consultancy analysed the application process which – at that time – required interaction with 15 separate printed resources and multiple external agencies. IE created a workshop style, facilitated process where sports groups were led through the application process by a community leader e.g. a Social Worker, a Leisure Centre Manager, a Vicar or Imam. The pack dealt with everything from opening a bank account to progress checklists and scoring systems for self evaluation.
“IE’s Resource Pack is perfect for the ‘Awards for All’ programme. A plain English, no nonsense, tick-box approach with engaging photography and lighthearted cartoons has substantially diversified the profile of successful applicants.” Katharine Gray, Sport England
16 weeks from commission to pack launch. Enhanced on future print runs.
Improvement in race, gender, age and socio economic range of groups applying. Increase in both applications received and ratio of application to success rate. Pack was updated and reprinted 3 times and created a platform from which future online application system can be built.
